Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, is being faced with a copyright infringement lawsuit that alleges he stole his multi-Grammy award-winning hit record, "This is America". This is not the first time similarities were pointed out between this particular song and another, but it is the first lawsuit brought about that may have some traction.
Rapper, Kidd Wes, claims that Gambino's hit is a direct rip-off of his song "Made in America". He states that the hook and flow are nearly identical. According to TMZ, Kidd dropped his song on SoundCloud in the fall of 2016, uploading it to YouTube a few months later. He registered the song, which was intended to be the lead single on his upcoming album, with the US Copyright Office in the Spring of 2017. Childish Gambino released "This Is America" a year later, in 2018.
Kidd Wes is also including the co-writers of the song, Roc Nation, and Young Thug, one of many artists whose vocals are featured in the background of the song, in the suit. Childish Gambino has yet to respond to the allegations.
