Mr. Country Grammar himself, Nelly, is set to receive BET’s “I Am Hip Hop” Award this year. The BET Hip Hop Awards will be celebrating Nelly for his contributions to music and his overall impact to the culture. The St. Louis rapper has sold over 21 million records, reportedly making him the 4th highest selling rap artist in the country. He has 3 number 1 albums according to the Billboard 200 (Country Grammar, Nellyville and Suit). He also has 4 number 1 hits on Billboards HOT 100 (Hot in Herre, Dilemma, Shake Ya Tailfeather and Grillz).
The rapper states, “I am honored to receive this award and humbled to be in such great company of past artists who have received this award,” Nelly said in a statement. “I have been blessed to work with some incredible people in my career, making 22 years go by in the blink of an eye. This award isn’t just about Nelly; it is about my fans, BET, and the people that continue to support me and allow me to do what I love to do.”
Last year, Master P. took home the award. Previous other winners include: LL Cool J, Ice Cube, MC Lyte, Scarface, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Uncle Luke and Lil’ Kim. The 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards is scheduled to air on Tuesday, October 5th on BET.
