Paul Mooney, best known for his collaborations with Richard Pryor, passed away today of an apparent heart attack at the age of 79. CNN contributor Roland Martin was one of the first to break the news, as Mooney’s cousin, Rudy Ealy, relayed the news to Martin earlier today.
The writer, comedian, and actor wrote for sitcoms such as “Sandford and Son” and “Good Times”, however, most would agree that his greatest works were the many collaborations he performed with Legendary comedian Richard Pryor. Mooney was the head writer for “The Richard Pryor Show”, co-wrote a large portion of Pryor’s comedy albums, and also provided material for Pryor when he hosted “Saturday Night Live.”
Mooney was a genius when it came to mixing in social commentary with his comedy, as was apparent when he was introduced to a younger generation via his regular appearances on the “Chappelle Show”.
