Nature Verses Nurture is a 5 song feature-heavy EP from artist Wyatt Coleman, that aims to feed your
soul using the jazzy/lo-fi type of Hip-Hop you hear from artists like Mick Jenkins, Saba, Noname, Etc. This type of Jazz Hop is used to create a relaxing boom bap backpack vibe. The biggest question is...How
does Wyatt Coleman fare in this lane? Wyatt is a vibey, stoner rapper. He raps and sings about checking
vibes, life, leaving things unsaid, and smoking. This is that roll up and smoke music with good
production that create a feeling of peace to nurture the soul no matter how turbulent the nature of the
song is. Out the gate, he comes out swinging with a great feature from Mick Jenkins, who I swear raps
like the rent is do all the time. ‘Glass of Water’ is my favorite track on the album and sets the stage for
the vibe of the album. Wyatt’s lyrical content suffices for the album as well as his features on the
album.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with his rapping but you're left hoping he would say some
things that would make you hit the rewind button. Wyatt is following the breeze and just enjoying his
time on these tracks, and it shows, for example, on ‘Window Pane’ he speaks on just living to
experience life. ‘Check The Vibe’ he speaks on elevating no matter if it is life, music, or smoke. I like
the album but by song five it does start to sound a little similar due to his flow and production.
Production is jazzy and uses a lot of instrumentation. This album could easily be created with a live
band. There are uses of horns and pianos like an orchestra is playing. The production lends very well to
each other creating a very cohesive project where everything weaves together without sounding exactly
the same, even though it comes a little close. Coming in at 17 minutes this album make for a good
listen doing your smoke session or just needing some music to vibe out to. While Nature Verses
Nurture may not be everybody’s cup of tea, this is a solid project. A couple of gripes are that I would
have loved to see a little bit more variation in the subject matter and as a rapper, I wish he would have
just let lose once. The overall tone of the album is a little too laid back with Wyatt’s flow, beat selection, and even features. This was a part that affected the replay value. We would love to see him switch it up. Nature Verse Nurture somewhat accomplishes what it is trying to do in this lane and does a decent job overall.
